At Blackthorn Primary School, we believe that play is a child’s right, and we aim for our school community to foster an environment where high-quality play is the foundation of every child’s unstructured time.
As an OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) in progress school, we are committed to continually developing our play provision so that it reflects the needs, interests and voices of all our pupils. Through the OPAL programme, we are working to create a rich, inclusive and stimulating outdoor environment that encourages creativity, cooperation, resilience and wellbeing. This journey involves ongoing reflection, staff development and engagement with our wider school community, ensuring that playtimes are valued as an essential part of every child’s school experience and contribute meaningfully to their social, emotional and physical development.
Play is great for children’s wellbeing and development. When planning and providing play opportunities, the goal is not to eliminate risk, but to weigh up the risks and benefits. No child will learn about risk if they are wrapped in cotton wool.
